Friends close…enemies closer

It was an invitation much too good for Daniel to decline – to work out at a world renowned state of the art facility is an opportunity that one doesn’t take for granted. It was the best of the best in training facility, sports venue, workout, combination country club and sports facility that only the elite athletes of all sports used and enjoyed. The yearly membership fees were the equivalent of an average yearly salary. Daniel accepted the dangling carrot of the invitation, but he had a feeling it would result in the proverbial stick, with more to be revealed as it would play itself out. He sensed there was something of importance that had prompted David Towne to extend the kind of opportunity he knew Daniel wouldn’t turn down.

He signed in at reception and was directed to the locker and changing areas. He was told that he could find Mr. Towne in the lounge area. Daniel proceeded past the chrome and glass areas with individual workout areas for specific muscle groups, massage areas, wet areas, handball courts, running track, changing rooms, and the lounge area which had a sweeping view of the outdoor tennis courts with driving range and a golf course in the landscaped area in the rear of the facility. It was impressive, but not more than what he had come to expect.

Daniel found the locker, made a quick change, and headed for the lounge area. There was a rerun of a Cowboys game going unnoticed when Daniel caught sight of David, legs spread and leaned comfortably back in the leather seating. He appeared to be nursing a juice drink but motioned to Daniel as he caught his approach.

David stood to greet him as a staff member approached to deliver bottled water and inquired if he would like something else to drink. Daniel confirmed that the water was fine.

“David, what is that you’re drinking there, it looks a bit strange,” Daniel smiled.

“I think it’s some sort of green horse piss that a company has asked me to possibly endorse. Here, take a sip and tell me what you think.”

Daniel took a sip, made a face, and set the glass down. “That shit is nasty,” he said as he opened his bottled water and took a drink.

“Yep, that’s what I thought…supposed to be some sort of energy health concoction, but they must have used the water from Sulpher Springs, because I can’t choke it down. I think I’ll pass on that one,” David chuckled.

“So how have you been, Daniel? It’s good to see you again.”

Daniel sensed that David wasn’t all that comfortable with small talk.

“Keeping busy at work, taking part, and life is moving on in one form or another. We’re gearing up for the convention in New Orleans,” Daniel answered. “Will you be going down there during that time?”

“Yeah, I don’t miss any chance of going to New Orleans. I’ve had some of the best sex in my life after games I’ve played down there.
